In 1994, AltaGas Services Inc. began operations in Calgary, Alberta with two services contracts and 21 employees who shared a vision of building a western Canadian midstream business. The founders recognized a critical gap in connecting North American energy producers to global markets, particularly for natural gas and natural gas liquids. What started as a focused regional player has evolved into a leading North American energy infrastructure company that now connects customers from well sites to doorsteps and beyond to markets in Asia.
Today, nearly 3,000 people work across the organization's diversified Utilities and Midstream businesses, serving approximately 1.6 million customers through regulated utilities like Washington Gas and SEMCO across four U.S. jurisdictions. As early exporters of Canadian liquid petroleum gas to overseas markets, AltaGas built Canada's first propane export facility - the Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal - demonstrating their commitment to unlocking new market growth. The company has grown from Alberta roots to operations spanning five Canadian provinces and numerous American states, all while maintaining an entrepreneurial culture and creating shareholder and social value through strategic infrastructure investments.
