The Autry Museum of the American West is a museum in Los Angeles's Griffith Park dedicated to bringing together the stories of all peoples of the American West. It presents the histories, experiences and cultural perspectives of Indigenous peoples and the region's diverse communities through exhibitions, research, education and public programming. The collection holds more than 600,000 art and cultural objects, including a significant body of Native American materials.
The museum's galleries and exhibitions address narrow portrayals of the American West, while the Chrystina and James R. Parks Research Center supports the collections and archives and facilitates consultation and collaboration with Native nations and Indigenous communities. Repatriation of cultural materials is carried out in partnership with those same communities. Related technical domains include museum conservation, collections management, archival research and cultural heritage preservation.
Public and education programmes span school programmes, lectures, films, theatre performances, festivals, family activities and community events. The institution operates across the museums and cultural institutions, arts and culture, education and nonprofit cultural heritage sectors, with a stated commitment to diversity and to inclusive representation of Indigenous peoples and the region's diverse communities.
