The yard's principal programmes are the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers and the Zumwalt-class stealth destroyers, among the most advanced warships afloat. Technical work spans naval shipbuilding, surface combatant design and construction, stealth ship technology, ship systems installation, welding and fabrication, design engineering, ship maintenance and support, and sea trials.
Roles cover a wide range of environments, from offices and the shop floor to work onboard ships during sea trials. The company runs training programmes that help people build skills in the trades, with career paths running from areas such as carpentry through to design engineering. Work is organised around a team-oriented "shipbuilders" culture, and the work itself is tied directly to national defence.
Bath Iron Works is a major regional employer in Maine.
