About

Founded in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is an independent nonprofit organization devoted to protecting gem and jewelry consumers through research, education, and laboratory services. The institute established the now-universal standards for diamond evaluation, including the 4Cs grading system - Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat - which became the industry benchmark in 1953 along with its International Diamond Grading System.

GIA operates laboratories and educational facilities in eleven countries across four continents, with its headquarters in Carlsbad, California. Its technical focus spans gemology, diamond grading, and gemological research. The institute also publishes Gems & Gemology, a quarterly journal that has advanced gemological knowledge since 1934.

Roles at GIA draw on expertise in gemology, laboratory sciences, and education. The organization's nonprofit mission centers on setting global quality standards for diamonds, colored stones, and pearls, making it a defining institution within the gem and jewelry industry.
