Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Inc. is a regional integrated healthcare system established in 1965 through the merger of The Hospital for the Women of Maryland (founded 1882) and Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital. Based in Towson, Maryland, the organisation operates three core components: GBMC, a 275-bed medical facility handling more than 23,000 admissions and over 50,000 emergency department visits annually; GBMC Health Partners, a network of more than 300 primary care providers and specialists; and Gilchrist, a nationally recognised provider of serious illness and end-of-life care serving over 7,500 patients annually.
The system employs approximately 3,900 staff members, supported by nearly 1,000 physicians on staff and about 1,000 volunteers. Operations span hospital care, primary care delivery, palliative care, and medical education. The organisation's founding principles emphasised patient-centred design - GBMC was built with largely single-patient rooms and nursing stations positioned so no patient room exceeded 40 feet from immediate care access, features considered innovative at the time of opening.
