Numonyx was a semiconductor company that designed and manufactured non-volatile memory products, spanning NOR, NAND and Phase Change memory technologies. Its components were used in consumer and industrial devices including cellular phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, computers and high-tech industrial equipment. The company was founded on March 31st 2008 as a joint venture combining the flash memory divisions of Intel Corporation, STMicroelectronics and Francisco Partners, and operated as an independent business dedicated to non-volatile memory solutions.
At its peak, Numonyx was the largest vendor in the global NOR flash market, holding a 34.6% share in 2009. Its product portfolio covered integrated NOR memory for mobile and computing devices, NAND memory for consumer and industrial applications, and Phase Change memory technology. The work behind these products spanned semiconductor design and manufacturing across multiple technical disciplines in memory engineering.
Headquartered in Rolle, Switzerland, the company maintained facilities in the United States, Israel, Singapore, China and Italy. Its independent existence was brief: Micron Technology acquired Numonyx on February 9th 2010 in a transaction valued at approximately $1.27 billion.
