SMS group is a family-owned plant construction and mechanical engineering company serving the metals industry. Founded in 1871 by Carl Eberhard Weiss as a small forging business in Siegen, Germany, it now employs around 14,500 people across more than 100 locations in over 30 countries. Its work spans the full life cycle of metallurgical plants: new equipment for iron and steel, aluminium, and copper and non-ferrous producers, plus upgrades, modernizations, maintenance and spare parts management for existing machinery.
Technical work at the company covers plant construction, mechanical engineering, metallurgical machinery and processes, automation and visualization systems, manufacturing, and project management. A second strand concerns digital technologies, including data management and software solutions for metals producers. Environmental programmes form a third: green steel solutions, hydrogen technology, circular economy approaches, and lithium-ion battery recycling are all part of the company's stated mission of "turning metals green", or enabling the transition to carbon-neutral and sustainable metals production.
The company describes itself as combining deep metallurgical expertise with engineering and digitalization, and as a truly international business. Operations run across more than 30 countries, with the founding location in Siegen, Germany.
