TerraPower LLC is a nuclear energy company founded in 2008 by Bill Gates and a group of visionaries, with the stated mission of solving climate change and energy poverty through safe, affordable and abundant carbon-free energy. Over more than 15 years it has developed advanced nuclear technologies, and its first reactor is currently under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
The company's flagship product is the Natrium reactor, which delivers reliable baseload power with integrated thermal energy storage. Cooled by liquid sodium and operating at atmospheric pressure, the design produces 40% less waste than traditional reactors and achieves three times the fuel utilisation of light water reactors, while requiring 50% less safety-related concrete, steel and labour. Combined with hybrid energy systems, the plant can scale power output by 500 MW electric at a rate of 10% per minute.
Technical work spans advanced nuclear reactor design, liquid sodium cooling, fast reactor and advanced fuel utilisation, integrated energy storage, hybrid energy systems, medical isotope production and zero-carbon baseload power generation. Beyond electricity, TerraPower applies nuclear science to medical isotope production intended to improve the precision of cancer treatment, and states a goal of global health and economic impact.
Operations are concentrated at the Kemmerer, Wyoming construction site, with work spanning the energy and power generation, nuclear, healthcare and clean energy sectors. The company describes its orientation as mission-driven, combining long-term research and development with energy access and health outcomes.
