UT Health San Antonio is South Texas's largest academic research institution and academic health center. Founded in 1959, with its doors opening in 1968 to address a shortage of advanced medical education and specialised care in an underserved region, the institution employs some 8,500 professionals across education, research and patient care. Its stated mission is described internally as "making lives better", and its culture is built around service to the region and improving community health outcomes.
The organisation operates six health professional schools - medicine, nursing, dentistry, health professions, graduate biomedical sciences and public health - which together educate more than 3,600 students each year. A large clinical enterprise delivers care in 100 medical specialties and handles 2.5 million patient visits annually. For those moving on from uniformed or public-service careers, the relevant point is the breadth of the operation: a workforce of that size encompasses clinical, technical, educational, research and administrative functions, all oriented toward public service rather than commercial products.
Research is a central pillar. The institution runs an annual research portfolio exceeding $436 million and is home to the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in the region, as well as the first National Institute on Aging-designated Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Texas. Its work spans biomedical and cancer research, Alzheimer's and ageing research, clinical and translational research, and public health.
Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, UT Health San Antonio serves a region spanning thousands of square miles and is described as the primary catalyst for San Antonio's $44.1 billion healthcare and biosciences sector. More information is available at https://uthscsa.edu/.
