The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is a federally recognized sovereign tribal nation of the Shawnee people, headquartered in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. It is one of three federally recognized Shawnee tribes in the United States, and its members reside in two states, Oklahoma and Missouri. The tribe operates its own government and delivers public services to its citizens directly, an arrangement rooted in a stated philosophy of self-determination.
As an employer, the tribe combines government functions with commercial enterprises. Its government side covers a broad range of member services: health and social services, education programs, vital statistics and enrollment, child development assistance, housing support, and cultural preservation initiatives. Its business side runs gaming and casino operations that serve as significant economic drivers for the tribal community and the surrounding region, alongside hospitality enterprises and other economic development ventures.
Work spans the public-service and commercial spheres of a sovereign nation, from health, education and housing programmes to gaming, hospitality and enterprise development. The tribe describes a history shaped by forced relocations and generational adversity, and a current focus on building the foundation for its culture, businesses and government.
