Native American Health Center (NAHC) is a nonprofit community health organisation and Federally Qualified Health Center serving California's San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1972 by American Indian community leaders as the Urban Indian Health Board, it operates today as one of the oldest and largest Urban Indian Health programs in the United States. The organisation employs hundreds of staff and runs a $44m annual operating budget.
NAHC delivers medical, dental and behavioural health care, alongside community wellness and social services, from 17 sites across three counties, including San Francisco, Oakland and Richmond. It serves more than 14,000 members a year. Services are open to all patients regardless of tribal or ethnic background. Its stated model treats physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs as interconnected, with culture placed at the centre of prevention.
Beyond clinical care, NAHC runs school-based health centres, WIC nutrition services, workforce development programmes and community events. Its Seven Directions Healthcare Facility in Oakland combines medical and dental care with 36 units of affordable family housing, integrating health and housing provision on a single site.
The organisation describes its staff as reflecting the communities it serves. Work spans primary care, dentistry, behavioural health, nutrition, social services and programme delivery across a mission-driven, publicly accountable provider.
