St. Thomas University is a private, nonprofit Catholic university in Miami Gardens, Florida, founded in 1961 as Biscayne College by the Augustinian Friars. It offers more than 60 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degree programs, delivered both on campus and online, across five colleges: the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences & Technology, the College of Law, the Gus Machado College of Business and Biscayne College for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
Experiential learning is embedded in the undergraduate curriculum as a graduation requirement. Students fulfil it through internships, cooperative education, practicums, study abroad, research, academic competitions and apprenticeships. The university's stated emphasis is on professional preparation alongside research, critical analysis and communication, within an institutional culture shaped by its Catholic identity and mission and by a commitment to a diverse student body.
In emerging technology, the university runs the Institute for Ethical Leadership, which advances ethical leadership in the field, and the Artificial Intelligence Research & Ethics Network, a research network focused on AI and its ethical dimensions. An Ethical AI Standards initiative is intended to establish ethical standards for artificial intelligence. These sit alongside the university's teaching and research strengths in nursing, health sciences and technology, law, business, and liberal arts and social sciences.
Programs are available to students on the Miami Gardens campus and through online distance study.
