Zoo New England is a private non-profit organisation that operates Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Founded as the Commonwealth Zoological Corporation in 1991, the organisation took its current name in 1997. Both facilities hold accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a distinction held by fewer than 10 per cent of animal exhibitors nationwide.
Franklin Park Zoo occupies 72 acres within Boston's Franklin Park, part of Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace Park System, and traces its origins to 1912. Stone Zoo, a 26-acre facility established in 1905, sits near Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham. Zoo New England assumed management of Franklin Park Zoo from the Metropolitan District Commission in 1997.
The organisation's mission centres on inspiring visitors to protect and sustain the natural world through integrated wildlife management, conservation programmes, research, and education. Its work combines the operational demands of running two established zoological facilities with broader conservation and educational objectives across the region.
