Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a biomedical research and bioscience institution with sites on Long Island, New York, and in Suzhou, China. Its work spans cancer research, neuroscience, genomics, quantitative biology, plant biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, molecular biology and genetics, alongside drug testing and biotechnology. The institution conducts research and runs education, scientific communication and technology-transfer programs aimed at translating research into better human health.
Its research infrastructure includes an NCI-designated Cancer Center and advanced drug-testing facilities. A technology-transfer program incubates biotechnology startups arising from Laboratory research, having produced more than 25 such companies. Scientific exchange is organized through a Meetings & Courses Program that hosts more than 12,000 scientists annually, supported by the Banbury Center and by CSHL Press, the Laboratory's scientific publishing arm.
Training is a substantial part of the enterprise. A Graduate School, an Undergraduate Research Program, the Partners for the Future education program and the DNA Learning Center provide research and bioscience instruction at levels ranging from school students and educators to postgraduate researchers. The Laboratory reports affiliations with eight Nobel Prize laureates, including James D. Watson, and has made foundational contributions to molecular biology and genetics.
The working environment is described as a collaborative, international research community organized around a mission-driven focus on translating research into human health, with an emphasis on education, training and broadening access to modern bioscience.
