Thurston County is a governmental entity serving more than 300,500 residents across 727 square miles in southwestern Washington State, making it the sixth most populous county in the state. The county seat is Olympia, the state capital, and its jurisdiction extends to communities including Lacey, Tumwater, Yelm, and several smaller municipalities along the southern end of Puget Sound.
The county operates a comprehensive range of public services under the direction of a five-member Board of County Commissioners. These include law enforcement and public safety through the Sheriff's Office, emergency management and disaster response, courts administration, elections management, public health and social services, and public works including road maintenance, parks, solid waste management, and water utilities. The county also manages community planning and economic development initiatives.
Community engagement is embedded in the county's governance structure through volunteer advisory boards that inform policy decisions across departments. This ensures residents have mechanisms to participate in the administration of county services and planning processes.
