VOA Upstate New York is a nonprofit human-services organisation founded in 1896. It serves approximately 10,000 people a year across Rochester, Binghamton, Ithaca and surrounding communities, working on poverty, homelessness and inequality. The organisation has developed more than 30 programmes, and its stated aim is to promote self-reliance and stability among the people it serves.
Its work is organised around four main areas. The housing and support continuum covers emergency family shelters, housing for older adults and veterans, permanent supportive housing and rental assistance. Residential reentry services are designed to reduce recidivism among people leaving the criminal-justice system. The Children's Center provides childcare, early-childhood education, school-readiness programming, family development services and disability support, serving more than 500 children and families annually. The Farm, a hydroponic operation, distributes fresh produce to households and food pantries throughout Monroe County.
The organisation's stated culture emphasises restoring hope, dignity and a sense of belonging, and it frames its programmes around the root causes of poverty, homelessness and inequality rather than short-term relief. Roles across these programmes span direct service, residential supervision and case work, in fields including housing and homelessness services, childcare and early-childhood education, criminal-justice and reentry services, and food security.
VOA Upstate New York operates in Upstate New York, with a presence in Rochester, Binghamton, Ithaca and Monroe County. Further information is available at https://voaupny.org/.
