YWCA Central Alabama is a social justice organisation founded on March 24th 1903 by Maybelle Sloss. Based in Birmingham and serving Central Alabama for more than 120 years, its stated mission is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The organisation works across three core areas: community housing, child development and domestic violence services, and it advances the lives of thousands of women, children and families each year.
Its direct services include a confidential domestic violence shelter and the Interfaith Hospitality House for families experiencing homelessness. A nationally accredited Child Development Center provides early learning programmes for homeless, low-income and working-class children from birth through age five. The Family Resource Center delivers workforce development, job skills training and economic empowerment programmes, while counselling, child care, temporary housing assistance and advocacy wrap around families to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
Work at YWCA Central Alabama is mission-driven and oriented towards public-facing service delivery, crisis response and case support, with an emphasis on racial justice and social equity advocacy. Services are delivered confidentially and inclusively, including interfaith hospitality work. The organisation's operating area is Birmingham and the wider Central Alabama region.
