The Center for Elders' Independence (CEI) is a non-profit healthcare organisation serving at-risk seniors in California's East Bay. Founded more than 40 years ago, it helps eligible older adults continue living in their own homes rather than in nursing facilities, delivering comprehensive medical and social services through the PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) model. Its work spans Alameda and Contra Costa counties, with locations in Oakland, San Leandro and Livermore.
CEI operates a capitated Medicare and Medi-Cal programme that integrates primary care, dental services, home care support, hospital care and specialty services into a single plan of care. Participants attend Adult Day Health Centers - multiple sites across the East Bay - that address physical, emotional and social well-being, and are seen at primary care clinics that form part of the same integrated coverage. Care is planned by interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and other professionals, with an emphasis on participant autonomy and quality of life.
Roles at CEI sit within a mission-driven, community-based setting that serves a vulnerable population and coordinates closely across clinical and social disciplines. The organisation's stated commitment is to help seniors remain active members of their communities, and its operating model combines home-based services, day-centre programming and managed care under one integrated structure.
