Providence Housing Authority, established in 1939, is one of Rhode Island's largest landlords, providing and developing safe, quality, and affordable housing opportunities throughout the state. The organization manages 2,606 public housing units across elderly and disabled, family, and scattered site developments, housing approximately 5,613 residents, whilst administering over 2,700 Section 8 vouchers that enable low-income families to rent in the private market. In total, the authority serves more than 12,000 residents in the City of Providence.
Beyond housing provision, Providence Housing Authority operates a Resident Services Department delivering supportive services in wellness, financial stability, and employment through its own programmes and a partner network across Rhode Island. The authority is governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor of Providence and Providence City Council, reflecting its status as a quasi-governmental agency with a mission-driven focus on affordable housing access.
